May 8, 2009: The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Energy (DOE) announced an agreement to streamline and better coordinate Federal weatherization programs funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The step intends to create tens of thousands of new green jobs and provide business opportunities for companies that retrofit houses for weatherization. The Recovery Act allotted $16 billion to HUD and DOE to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes.
